RF is best considered an adjunct within the treatment of back pain.
In two large studies Gibson et al. 1985 and Sweetman et al. 1993 did not find RF alone was any better than contemporary treatments for LBP.
Wagstaff et al. 1986 (6 sessions over 3 weeks 15mins per session) said RF offered significant pain relief.
Kerem and Yigiter 2002 showed reduced pain (they used 3 different doses in the study all of which worked, however they also included active exercises for each group).
Shakoor et al. 2008, Ahmed et al. 2009 and Shakoor et al. 2010 all used 18 sessions over 6 weeks for 15min treatments showing reduction in LBP in ‘chronic’ patients.
Kim et al. 2012 said RF significantly helped patients with LBP compared to mobilisation alone (single session of RF with mobilisation vs mobilisations alone)
